"AI makes everyone equally more productive." The evidence does not support this. Less experienced workers see larger gains, but high-creativity individuals continue to outperform lower-creativity individuals even with AI access. Boundary Conditions

When AI literacy is absent. The productivity case for AI rests substantially on the ability to direct and evaluate the tool effectively. Absent that literacy, AI tools can produce plausible-looking but mediocre or misleading outputs without the user recognizing the problem. The same tool that produces an 18% quality gain for an experienced user may produce no gain — or a quality decline — in the hands of someone who cannot evaluate the output.

The ideation ceiling. AI augmentation has a structural weakness in early-stage creative work. Divergent, exploratory thinking characteristic of initial concept development is poorly supported by current generative systems. Tools designed for specification-and-generation workflows cannot substitute for the kind of undirected exploration that characterizes good early conceptual work. Measuring AI productivity gains only in execution phases will overstate the total gain across a complete creative process.
