When This Framework Breaks Down
1. Deliberate practice requires a defined performance standard The framework presupposes that someone — a teacher, a coach, a field — knows what expert performance looks like and can specify it. In highly emergent or novel domains, this standard does not exist. You cannot design deliberate practice for a skill no one has yet mastered.
2.
