Core Concepts
Three Types of Cognitive Load
The lens that makes architecture legible as a human experience is cognitive load theory. It distinguishes three categories of mental work, and each maps directly onto architectural decisions.

When an interface forces developers to burn cycles on incidental decisions — which config key, which option, which library — they have less capacity left for actual understanding and problem-solving. Working memory holds roughly 4 units of information at a time; every unnecessary decision consumes one of those slots.
Two Different Cognitive Modes: Assembly vs Selection
Composable and configurable systems impose different types of cognitive load, not just different amounts.
Assembly (composition from primitives) creates binding load: developers must hold multiple components in working memory simultaneously, track relationships between them, and mentally simulate how they combine. Early in a developer's exposure to a system, this is expensive. Poorly designed primitive-based systems make this worse through unclear interfaces, inconsistent composition rules, or lack of guidance.
Selection (configuration from presets) creates decision load: developers must evaluate a set of alternatives against their goals and constraints. This is cheaper per-decision but does not compound into understanding. When the number of configuration options is large, users must evaluate each option against their goals and constraints, creating sustained analytical processing that fatigues cognitive resources.
Assembly builds mental models through productive struggle. Selection defers decisions without building the capacity to make better ones.
Neither mode is free. The question for architects is: which load are we designing into our system, for whom, and when?
Choice Overload Is Non-Linear
A common assumption is that more options means proportionally more decision cost. The reality is more troubling. Research shows that complexity increases with the difficulty of comparing options, not just the number of options — consumers showed more cognitive effort with 2-3 hard-to-compare alternatives than with 6 easy ones. Users also tend to remain at lower expertise levels rather than engaging with complex multi-level interfaces — they find a threshold and stop.
This matters because it explains why teams under-use configuration systems. The problem is not that there are too many options; it is that the options are hard to compare without deep domain knowledge that the team may not yet have.
Error Patterns Differ by Cognitive Mode
Assembly and configuration also produce different failure signatures.
Assembly errors stem from incorrect mental models: misunderstanding how primitives compose, overgeneralizing from prior experience, false assumptions about component interactions. Debugging these requires model repair — identifying and correcting the wrong mental model. This is where experts have an enormous advantage: expert debugging relies on pattern recognition that occurs subconsciously, while novices engage in bottom-up, line-by-line assembly.
Configuration errors are about misalignment: the developer chose a preset that seemed appropriate but has hidden constraints, or overlooked a better-fitting option. Debugging these is a verification problem — did I select the right path given my actual needs?

Over time, assembly experiences accumulate into rich, transferable schemas that enable flexible problem-solving in novel situations, while selection experiences remain tied to specific preset paths. This is the long-run argument for composable systems: they build the cognitive infrastructure that makes future flexibility cheap. But it requires investment in guided learning, not just documentation.
5. Progressive disclosure is a design obligation, not a nice-to-have
Progressive disclosure — gradually revealing functionality complexity as learners develop competence — produces measurably better learning outcomes than exposing full complexity upfront.
